The Range

A zone’s range is edited in the MAPPING tab of the pane at the top of the edit screen. The SAMPLE tab is covered in The Sample, The Variants, and Empty Zones.

The MAPPING tab edits the lead zone:

  • Root Key: the key at which the sample plays at its recorded pitch.
  • Key Range: the lowest and highest keys the zone plays.
  • Key XFade: fade-in and fade-out widths, inside the key range.
  • Vel Range and Vel XFade: the same, for velocity.
  • Pitch Bend: bend range down and up, in keys. GRP uses the group’s range.
  • Pitch: tuning offset in semitones.
  • Amplitude: level offset, -36 to +36 dB.
  • Keytrack: how far pitch follows the keyboard, from -2x to 2x.
  • Pan

Changes to the key and velocity ranges move all selected zones together. Hold Alt to change only the lead zone.

The map shows keys across and velocity up, with each zone as a rectangle.

  • Drag a zone to move its keys and velocity. The root key moves with it.
  • Drag an edge to resize the key or velocity range, or a corner for both.
  • Click where zones overlap to cycle through them.
  • Drag on empty space to select several zones.
  • Cmd/Ctrl-drag on empty space to draw a new empty zone.
  • Double-click the lead zone to open the SAMPLE tab.
  • The lock button stops drags from moving zones.

Click the keyboard below the map to play a note; the height of the click sets velocity. Drag from the root key to move it.

Drop audio files on the map to create zones. The drop position sets the root key, and dropping higher makes a wider key range.

  • Several files are placed side by side.
  • Hold Shift to stack them as velocity layers over one key range.
  • Hold Alt to make one zone with the files as variants.

Samples dropped on the map use their loop points but not any mapping stored in the file. Drop them on the group and zone tree instead to use the file’s root key and ranges.
